I’m in love with any type of game night. Group games, double dates, romantic dinners – you name it. Games have their place in just about any scenario.
But when you’re limited to only two people, it may be hard to find the perfect game to fit the mood.
Maybe you’re looking for some romantic games. Maybe you’re looking for a few laughs. Maybe you want to get to know your partner better than you did yesterday.
What fun games can couples play together?
There are several games that couples can play together. The options are nearly endless.
Since my husband’s love language is quality time, playing a game together is usually our go-to when it’s just us, whether it’s a typical Tuesday night or a special occasion.
If you’re looking for some new ideas, dear reader, you’ve come to the right place.
Get ready to crack open a bottle of wine, put on your favorite songs and whip up some finger food.
As a disclaimer, I’m including a variety of ideas in this list to cover a range of games for different couples. One idea may have a different vibe from the next.
With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite date night games for married couples…
11. It Takes Two
This one is for video gamers. And admittedly, I am usually not one.
I played a mean game of Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart back in the day, but when graphics got better, I became more motion sick while playing.
So even though I don’t play many video games, my husband and I did play It Takes Two together. It came highly recommended by several friends of ours.
This game is appropriately named because it actually can’t be played one-player. The idea of the game is that a married couple is on the verge of divorce when a magical spell turns them into a pair of toys.
The couple works together as their toy selves through a series of adorable challenges to undo the spell.
There aren’t many other online games like this one. It’s fun and cute and perfect for couples.
10. The Book of Questions
First a video game and now a book? Right.
This one isn’t a game exactly. Instead, it’s an assortment of interesting conversation starters.
My sister bought me this book, and every now and then I enjoy looking through it and marking a few pages of questions that I want to ask my husband.
Sometimes, his answers surprise me.
It’s a fun way to get to know your partner, even for those who have been in long-term relationships for many years.
The questions are deep and thought-provoking and it can also be fun to think through them for yourself.
It’s a good way to learn new things about your partner in your own living room.
9. DIY trivia night
Speaking of getting to know your partner, a trivia game can be a lot of fun for married couples. And what’s better than regular trivia? Married trivia.
Make up your own version of the newlywed game by grabbing a marker and some index cards. Write down a list of personalized questions about yourselves and put them in one pile and leave yourself some blank cards to write your answers.
It can be a fun way to get to know each other or walk down memory lane as you explain your answers.
Make up a reward for the winner. Maybe the loser has to do the dishes for a week. It’s a good way to work in some friendly competition.
When it’s DIY, there are always different ways to play, so be sure to feel free to make up your own rules with this one.
8. Our Moments: Couples edition
This one is for those who are looking for a romantic evening.
It’s on the brand of conversation starters, but you could make it your own game by implementing taking turns and using some obscure point system. A truth or dare of sorts.
It’s a similar idea to The Book of Questions mentioned above, but these questions are catered specifically for couples. Some of them can be a little on the sexy side.
Our Moments simply consists of a deck of cards with prompts such as “What’s your idea of a perfect vacation and how can we make it happen?” or “What makes you angrier than it should?”
I think these types of questions are important for married couples. In our busy lives, we can stop being curious about our partners, especially if you’ve been married for a while.
This deck is currently $19.95 on Amazon.
7. Heads Up! (Or Charades)
Ok, back to some light-hearted games.
If you’re on a budget, all you need here is a smartphone and yourselves. Heads Up or similar Charades games area available on the app store for free.
To play, one player holds their phone to their forehead while the app gives the other player a prompt to describe to their partner. Players try to get as many correct guesses as possible before the timer runs out.
Take turns and play through a variety of decks that have categories in music, animals, pop culture and more.
To me, this is one of the most fun couples games you can find in the app store.
6. Ascension: Apprentice Edition
Now, we’ll get into more of what I call the “crunchy” games.
Ascension is an award-winning deckbuilding game with several versions out on the market.
The Apprentice Edition comes in a small pack that offers the same strategy game for a smaller package, made specifically for two players. It’s set in a fantasy world where players use their heroes to defeat monsters and earn victory and honor.
If you’re looking for a fun night, it’s a good deckbuilder that is easy to learn and play.
Ascension: Apprentice Edition is currently $20.99 on Amazon.
5. Love Letter (or Lovecraft Letter)
I’ve written about Love Letter before, but it keeps popping up in my mind for just about any list that I write. It’s simply one of my favorite games and it plays well whether you have two players or six players.
The original version, Love Letter, might be more romantic since it centers around courting a princess instead of going insane to Cthulhu.
Since my husband and I enjoy the extra bit of complexity, we opt for Lovecraft Letter.
Beginner players may enjoy the original a bit more.
Lovecraft Letter is currently $14.96 on Amazon.

4. Code Names: Duo
Code Names: Duo is a duet expansion of the popular word deduction game Code Names.
This game is one of the best party games on the market, and now, this co-op clue-giving adventure is here for couples.
Players take turns giving each other clues that relate to the words on the board while avoiding the “enemies”. This game is simple yet challenging.
And, if you’re looking for a double date night, try Code Names: Undercover, an adult party game that is lots of fun and guaranteed to give you a good laugh.
3. Fog of Love
Full disclosure, I haven’t played Fog of Love (yet).
However, it’s been recommended to me a few times for being a fun board game for couples.
I will say that it has mixed reviews. I suspect the bad reviews are mostly from individuals who have never played an RPG before.
It’s a role-playing game at its core. Players create two vivid characters who meet, fall in love and face challenges to make an unusual relationship work.
If it’s your first time playing this type of game, remember that role-playing games aren’t always for everyone. But if you keep an open mind and let loose, they can generally be a lot of fun.
Consider embracing a new experience and trying something new. Fog of Love is currently $49.99 on Amazon.
2. Wingspan
There’s something about this game that I just find really peaceful and soothing, which can be a great thing if you want to relax and unwind with your sweetie.
This game is an engine-builder where you win points by laying eggs, collecting food and playing bird cards, which are all unique as well as beautiful. It’s truly one of the best games out there, in my opinion.
Wingspan currently sells for about $59.94 on Amazon. Expansions are also available.
1. Red Dragon Inn: Spyke and Flower
Finally, this is a new board game in our house.
Last year our anniversary was our “fruit and flower” year. So, I got a little creative and got my husband a Spyke and Flower version of Red Dragon Inn.
Red Dragon Inn is a classic board game in my house, and I love it the most because it plays well whether you have two players or 20.
If you’re looking for a fun yet quirky game, this may be it. Fight, drink and find treasure to make your way to victory.
For players who are new to this game, this expansion is beginner-friendly and themed from the popular game of Munchkin. It’s a standalone expansion to the original game.
