The Harry Potter series holds a special place in my heart.
I grew up reading the books. I went to many of the midnight releases. As an adult, I was lucky enough to get engaged inside Olivander’s at Universal Studios. My husband put a ring on a wand inside the wand shop and we basked in pre-wedding bliss while sipping on Butterbeer.
If you’re like me, it’s only natural that you would be interested in a few Harry Potter themed games.
Maybe you’re even throwing a whole Harry Potter themed party. Luckily, there are so many ways to be creative and have some fun with Harry Potter party ideas. (Is it just me or is it hard to say that out loud?)
Harry Potter themed party ideas
If you’re doing a whole theme, be sure to set the mood accordingly. For example, start by featuring some Polyjuice Potion punch or Butterbeer-inspired brews.
What is Polyjuice Potion punch you may ask? Well, I vote that it could be anything you want it to be. I’d leave out the leeches though.
But, there are so many creative ideas out there from folks who are more creative in the kitchen than I am.
I would personally just set out some punch and consider spiking it, if it is truly an adult party.
For dessert, make some cake pops that look like dragon eggs. This could be easily done with white frosting and speckles.
Set out a bowl of jelly beans from Bertie Bott. Have a photo booth in front of a Mirror of Erised. Leave some Hogwarts letters scattered around the front door.
There are so many ways to transform your living room into a magical place with surprisingly little effort and not too much money.
If you really want to go all out, encourage your guests to dress up like Harry Potter characters. Be sure you’re streaming the Harry Potter movies during the event.
Harry Potter party favors
With this theme, you could easily create some fun party favors or prize packs. You can buy chocolate frogs on Amazon for about $20, or make your own with a chocolate frog mold if you are talented in the kitchen and wish to save a few dollars.
Consider a themed goody basket for your party guests.
Some fun ideas I’ve seen for a Harry Potter party also involve an easy craft table to show off your artistic skills.
You could set up a table where people make their own Harry Potter wand. All you’d need are some sticks (or chopsticks), decorations and a hot glue gun. Feathers and string work really well for decorating the wand.
Are there any Harry Potter games?
The short answer here is yes. There are so many Harry Potter games, many adapted from standard popular board games including Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Code Names and more.
There are also several ways to adapt a DIY game for even more fun.
There are several games that are easily available on Amazon. Some of these you can also make up yourself. There are so many fun activities that everyone will enjoy, from true Harry Potter fans to someone who is more novice.
Here are a few Harry Potter games to try for a great time.

8. Harry Potter charades
This is an easy DIY game. Simply make a list of Harry Potter-related things and throw them in a fishbowl. Have your guests take turns and act out the phrases.
You could also adapt the “Fishbowl” game. Have each guest write down a Harry Potter noun and, again, throw them in a fishbowl (or container, or maybe even a Sorting Hat!).
The game will progress in three rounds. For the first round, players will take turns drawing a piece of paper from the bowl or hat and describing what it says to the other players.
Play until all players have had a turn. Do not return the parchment to the bowl or hat until each player has gone.
For the second round, players will do the same but this time, they only get one word to describe the parchment.
For the third round, players play charades and can say no words. It’s a fun adaptation and a lot of fun to play. Memory will help the players out a bit here.
7. Code Names: Harry Potter
If you like a good party board game, Code Names: Harry Potter Edition is a fun one.
Groups break off into two teams. Spymasters (team leads) will be assigned photo cards from rows of photo tiles that they must get their team to guess.
Team leaders can only give one-word clues, followed by a number that indicates how many words relate to that clue. The rest of the players decipher which words best fit the clue.
I love this game because it requires some wit to play it well, especially for the leaders. In the Harry Potter version, the game uses photos instead of words. I find this to be especially challenging since so many of the items are similar, but it’s still an enjoyable game that a lot of people can play at once.
6. Harry Potter trivia
The first time my husband went to an official Harry Potter trivia night, he was surprised by the super-specific questions that were asked.
The second time, we studied up and won third place.
Again, it’s easy to hold your own form of Harry Potter trivia. Just make a list of a few questions ahead of time, break up your party into different houses and ask away.
If you need some help, Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit is available on Amazon for $21.99.
5. DIY Quidditch
Speaking of my husband (can you tell we are a pair of Harry Potter nerds?), he also played Quidditch in college.
This option may not be a fit for all parties, but it’s hilarious if your get-together is during the day and you have the backyard space for it.
Use hula hoops for baskets, and don’t forget the brooms. You can simplify the rules a bit for newer players.
4. Beer pong Quidditch
Speaking of Quidditch, make some mini Quidditch goals and throw them in the middle of a long beer pong table.
There are several tutorials out there on how to make your own small Quidditch set, and they don’t look too difficult.
One of my favorites is linked above.
3. Potion Explosion
Gather some students around for an impromptu potions class. There are plenty of Harry Potter board games out there, and this isn’t one of them.
While this game isn’t specifically Harry Potter themed, it definitely fits the bill and is one of my favorite board games.
The game is currently $22.99 on Amazon. It plays 2-4 players.
2. Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle
If your party goers are board game people, you could consider one of the more “crunchy” games, such as Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle.
This game is a cooperative deck-building game where you play as your favorite character and play through all seven Harry Potter adventures.
It only plays 2-4 players. If I’m being honest, it’s not one of my favorite Harry Potter related games out there.
Still, if you like deck building games, it’s one of the more interesting options and has more depth than some of the others.
It is currently $43.99 on Amazon.
1. More DIY games: House Cup style
Nothing says Harry Potter like a good ol’ house competition. There are a lot of what I like to call “goofy” party games that you could easily implement yourself.
For example, host a Harry Potter relay race. Have a “sock toss” competition and free a house elf. Hold a scavenger hunt and hide a golden snitch. Have a series of mini-games and award house points to your winners.
The possibilities are nearly endless. If you’re organized and plan ahead, have a bracket system in place and a prize pack for the House Cup winner.
The good news is, the only real goal here is to have fun. As long as you and your guests are having a great time, that’s all that matters.
