The worst part about learning any new game is learning the rules and how to play.

Yuck.

The good news is that Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is pretty much the easiest game to learn on the face of the planet.

It’s a social card game that is super simple and super fun. It’s short-lived fun. But still, fun. On the box, it promises to “change your game night forever.” That seems a little dramatic, but I do enjoy this simple game.

It plays between 3-8 players and only takes about 10 minutes to play. It’s recommended for ages 8 and older.

Game set up

Shuffle the deck of cards and evenly deal them out to all of the players face down.

That’s it! The entire deck has 64 cards.

How to play Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

During the game, each player will hold their stack of cards face down.

The player to the left of the dealer will begin by placing a card from their deck in the center of the table face up (without looking at it until it’s revealed to everyone).

As a player places a card, they will say the name of the game out loud, one word at a time. So, the first word spoken will be “Taco”.

Each person will take turns, playing one card at a time, going in a circle and saying one word from the game title, in order.

Player one: “Taco” (place a card).

Player two: “Cat” (place a card).

“Goat” (place a card).

“Cheese” (place a card).

“Pizza” (place a card).

And so on. The player sequence continues to the left.

That’s it?

Almost. Eventually, the spoken word and the word on the played card will match. When that happens, all players slap their hands on top of the pile of cards as quickly as possible.

The last player to slap the pile of cards has to add the pile of cards to the bottom of the pile in their own hand.

The name of the game is to get rid of your deck of cards. It’s a similar game to “Spoons” in a way. You have to have quick reflexes.

Here’s an example

Let’s say you have a group of four people sitting around a table.

Each person will have a deck of cards that they hold in their hands.

The player to the dealer’s left would place a card face up in the middle of the table and say “Taco” (no matter what the card says).

The next player will say “Cat” as they place their card, then the following player would say “Goat”.

Players continue until they see a match. If the second player has a goat card, all players will try to slap the stack as fast as they can.

A match is when the spoken word and the word on the top card (the one that was just played) match.

Hand slapping is involved but try to play nice. Watch out for players with long nails.

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza rules

Okay, okay. The rules are simple. But what about the nitty-gritty?

When someone flinches, slaps incorrectly or even thinks about starting to slap but jerks back, they should forfeit the round and pick up the entire stack of cards in the middle.

Players should also keep a steady, fast rhythm to play the game correctly.

If a player forgets what word they’re on or doesn’t notice it’s his or her turn, that player should still pick up the cards in the center.

If you do the wrong action, you take the cards. Even if a player peeks at the card, they forfeit the round and pick up the cards in the center.

Basically, when there’s a discrepancy, usually the player in question should just take the cards.

But, the point is to have fun so just keep that in mind.

Specialty cards

For a bit of extra fun, the card game has an extra set of cards that include new characters. These cards add a bit of chaos with mind tricks to the players.

When these special character cards are revealed, players have to take specific actions before slapping the pile.

  • Gorilla card: All players slap their chest
  • Narwhal card: All players slap their hands above their heads to form a horn
  • Groundhog card: Players knock on the table with both hands

If a player does the wrong action, they take the pile of cards.

When does the game end?

The game ends when someone wins. The winner should have zero cards in their hand and then be the first to correctly slap a match or special card.

How much is Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza?

This addictive game from Dolphin Hat is currently available on Amazon for under $10.

It’s a great and well-designed little game that is easy to learn and play and definitely worth adding to your collection at such a low cost.

It’s the perfect starter game for your game night or works as a stand-alone if you want to bring it with you to an event. I recently brought this game with me to a local brewery and it was the perfect portable game. Just be careful not to spill any drinks in the process.

The only downside? It gets old after a while. I wouldn’t necessarily want to play this one for a super long time. Still, it’s a fun game and worth getting for its low price.
